What did you do today?
Today, we did the experiment on the extraction and identification of artificial colours.
We learnt how to extract food colouring from M&M's, before proceeding to identify the retention values of the food colouring extracted.
What did you learn today?
Today, I learnt that wool, without any fluorescent dye has a positive charge and that colorant molecules have low ph levels and are negatively charged, allowing both the wool and colorant molecules to bind. I also learnt, or rather, was reminded how to calculate the retention values of the different colours used to make M&Ms.
How do you feel about today's activities?
This project strengthened my knowledge on chromatography and the formula required to calculate the retention values. This project can be applied to test coloured drinks for poisonous colourings used or can also be used to test on athletes, making sure that there was no drug intake. Yet again, like yesterday, I found the process of extracting and identification of artificial colours an enjoyable one.
What new questions do you have regarding the discipline?
- What other ways can chromatography improve other's life?
